Who can benefit from Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy is for anyone who wants to explore their own self-development through the intentional union between the body, mind, and soul. It all starts with the spark of the soul, the client’s desire, which is often connected to one’s life purpose. The desire could be a specific goal, a personal issue needing resolution, a way you want to feel, obstacles you want to overcome. Then a combination of the 8 limbs of yoga are used to bring harmony and balance back into the mind, body, and soul so that the client is moving towards the desire.
What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy is the adaptation of yoga practices for people with health challenges. Yoga therapists recommend and structure specific regimens of postures, breathing practices, and relaxation techniques adapted to suit individual needs. Yoga Therapy can help work through physical ailments, emotional blockages, mental health concerns, addiction recovery, and any other imbalance in the physical body or nervous system.
Yoga Therapists have a specific, detailed training tailored specifically to the more clinical and healthcare focused use of the Yoga Practice.
What are the benefits of Physical Therapy?"
What can I expect from a Yoga Therapy Session?"
Yoga Therapy sessions are specifically tailored to the needs of the individual. Invitation and exploration replace expectation. A Yoga Therapy session is about utilizing the ancient practices of Yoga to help the body, mind, and spirit heal.
A session could start with the evaluation of a physical or emotional dis-ease or with a goal in mind. From there, we investigate further, perhaps with an assessment of the energy centers of the body, known as chakras, or with a somatic investigation which allows the body to speak, or examining patterns or obstacles to goals. After the assessment, we collaborate to create sustainable practices to balance any imbalances in the mind and body or any blockages standing in the way of manifesting the desire. During follow-up sessions, we track progress and make necessary adjustments to continue moving towards the desire.
Are all Yoga Therapy Sessions done 1:1?
No. Sessions can be 1:1, a small group, or in larger group sessions. We can work with individuals, families, or whole groups with a larger focus. Look for larger group sessions to come soon. Let us know if there is a specific topic you would like us to focus on.
Meghan Michals, RYT-800, IAYT Yoga Therapist, began her yoga journey just south of Chicago in 2012 because she was intrinsically called to yoga philosophy. She lives by the Rumi quote, “Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.” During the completion of her 200-hour hatha yoga teacher training, she discovered the therapeutic benefits of yoga, and she began studying yoga and other healing modalities as they related to mental and emotional wellness, specifically as a way to heal past trauma. Her studies included Yoga to Transform Trauma, Yoga and Mental Illness, Mindfulness and Body Image, and Subtle Energy. Additionally, she became a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Reiki Master. Then in 2020, she was drawn to kundalini yoga. Although COVID canceled her plans for a month-long immersion in India, she found Yoga Farm Ithaca, where she completed a 300-Hour Spiritual Warrior teacher training, which combined kundalini with enneagram, moon cycles, and psychology as well as prenatal yoga teacher training. Most recently, she completed her Yoga Therapist certification with Purusha Yoga School.
For over a decade, she has been committed to bringing yoga and alternative healing modalities to the general public as well as underserved communities. In addition to yoga studios in the Chicagoland area and private clients, she has taught yoga to teens and teachers in a high school setting and to adolescent and adult women in a residential treatment facility. She is a trauma-informed yoga teacher who specializes in hatha, slow flow, kundalini, restorative, yin, and prenatal. She is also skilled in guided meditations, breathwork, mantra, crystal singing bowls, and has been trained in Thai Yoga Body Massage. Meghan is deeply committed to the power of yoga in her own personal practice as well as using it to help people reach their full potential. She believes that as each individual heals and raises their vibration, that they effect positive change in the collective.
